What is it?
A minimally invasive procedure to repair a hernia — a condition where an internal organ pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or tissue wall, commonly in the abdominal area.
Common types of hernias treated laparoscopically:
-
Inguinal hernia (groin)
Umbilical hernia (navel)
Incisional hernia (after previous surgery)
Femoral hernia (upper thigh)
-
Visible swelling or bulge in the abdomen/groin
-
Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting or straining
-
Hernia that increases in size
-
Strangulated hernia (emergency)
How is it done?
-
2–3 small cuts in the abdomen
-
A laparoscope and instruments are inserted
-
The herniated tissue is pushed back
-
A mesh is placed to strengthen the area and prevent recurrence
-
Stitches or tacks are used to hold the mesh in place
Recovery:
-
Hospital stay: Usually 1 day
-
Light activities in 3–5 days
-
Full recovery in 1–2 weeks
