URS (Ureterorenoscopy)

What is it?

  • Stones stuck in the ureter (tube between kidney and bladder)
  • Small to medium kidney stones
  • Stones causing pain, blockage, or infection
  • When ESWL (shock wave treatment) is not suitable

How is it done?

  • No cuts required
  • A thin, flexible or rigid scope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter/kidney
  • The stone is located, broken with a laser (if needed), and removed
  • A stent (small tube) may be placed to help urine flow after surgery

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: Same day or 1 night
  • Back to work in 3–5 days
  • If a stent is placed, it’s usually removed after 1–2 weeks
