Ureteric Reimplantation

What is it?

A surgical procedure to reposition the ureter (the tube carrying urine from the kidney to the bladder) into a better position in the bladder to correct problems like reflux or blockage

  • Vesicoureteral reflux (urine flows backward from bladder to kidney)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), especially in children
  • Ureteric obstruction or narrowing
  • Ureter injury or abnormal placement

How is it done?

  • Performed under general anesthesia
  • An incision is made in the lower abdomen
  • The problem segment of the ureter is removed or adjusted
  • Ureter is reattached to a better location in the bladder
  • A stent or catheter may be placed for healing

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: 2–4 days
  • Catheter or stent removed after 1–2 weeks
  • Full recovery in 2–3 weeks
