Urethroplasty

What is it?

A reconstructive surgery to permanently treat a urethral stricture, especially if it’s long, recurrent, or complex.

  • Long-standing or recurrent urethral strictures
  • Failure of previous treatments like VIU
  • Strictures caused by injury, infection, or surgery
  • Poor urine flow or complete blockage

How is it done?

  • Performed under anesthesia
  • The narrowed part of the urethra is removed or widened
  • Sometimes a graft (from inside the cheek or skin) is used to rebuild the urethra
  • A catheter is placed for 2–3 weeks to allow healing

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: 1–3 days
  • Catheter removed after 2–3 weeks
  • Full recovery in 3–4 weeks
  • Follow-up tests may be done to check healing
