RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery)

What is it?

A modern, scar-free laser procedure to remove kidney stones by going through the natural urine passage using a flexible scope.

  • Small to medium kidney stones (up to 2 cm)
  • Stones in difficult locations (e.g., lower pole of the kidney)
  • Failed ESWL or URS
  • Patients who want a scar-free procedure

How is it done?

  • No external cut or incision
  • A Flexible Ureterorenoscope is passed through the urethra → bladder → ureter → kidney
  • Stone is located and powdered using a laser
  • A stent may be placed temporarily
  • Fragments are either removed or pass naturally

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: 1 day
  • Stent removed after 1–2 weeks if placed
  • Resume daily routine within 3–5 days
