VIU (Visual Internal Urethrotomy)

What is it?

A minimally invasive procedure to treat a urethral stricture (narrowing of the urine passage) by cutting and opening the narrowed segment.

  • Difficulty in passing urine
  • Thin or slow urine stream
  • Frequent urination or urinary tract infections
  • Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying

How is it done?

  • No external cuts
  • A small telescope (endoscope) is passed through the urethra
  • The narrow part is cut open using a special knife or laser
  • Sometimes a catheter is left in place for a few days

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: Mostly same-day or 1 night
  • Catheter removed in 3–5 days
  • Resume normal activities in 3–5 days
