PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy)

What is it?

A keyhole surgery to remove large kidney stones through a small cut in the back.

  • For kidney stones between 1 cm to 2 cm, Mini PCNL
  • For kidney stones larger than 2 cm
  • When other treatments like ESWL or URS fail
  • For complex or staghorn stones

How is it done?

  • A small incision is made in the back
  • A thin tube (nephroscope) is inserted into the kidney
  • Stones are broken into pieces using laser or ultrasound
  • Fragments are removed through the tube

Recovery:

  • Usually 2–3 days in hospital
  • Back to normal activities in about a week
