Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty

What is it?

A minimally invasive surgical procedure used to correct a blockage at the junction where the kidney meets the ureter (called the ureteropelvic junction, or UPJ). This condition is known as UPJ obstruction and can affect urine flow from the kidney.

  • Congenital or acquired UPJ obstruction
  • Recurrent flank pain (usually on one side)
  • Hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidney due to urine buildup)
  • Decreased kidney function on scans
  • Recurrent urinary infections or stones due to poor drainage

How is it done?

  • 3–4 small incisions in the abdomen or side
  • A laparoscope (camera) and instruments are inserted
  • The blocked section of the ureter is removed
  • The healthy part of the ureter is reattached to the kidney (renal pelvis)
  • A stent (DJ stent) is placed inside the ureter to aid healing

Recovery:

  • Hospital stay: 2–3 days
  • DJ stent removed after 4–6 weeks
  • Resume normal routine in 1–2 weeks
  • Follow-up ultrasound or scan to check kidney function
